Forensic Vet is constructing a database to assist in the identification of Pit Bull Type (PBT) dogs.
Hair is being collected from known PBT animals and identified using multiple, independent, microscopic characteristics. PBT dogs are legal in many jurisdictions and samples collected from these animals will form a large proportion of the database hair samples.
This is the first time any individual organization in the world has attempted to create a database to identify a particular breed of animal from microscopic hair analysis.
It is proposed that the database can assist in the identification of these dogs and exclude dogs which are not PBT from being mistakenly identified as an illegal breed.
It is hoped that this database can assist in removing PBT from the streets and provide a mechanism of identification that reduces the amount of PBT and non-PBT animals waiting in police custody as living evidence awaiting a trial.
It is expected this database will assist police services across the U.K and in other jurisdictions to reduce the amount of time and cost involved in keeping an animal in care awaiting a trial.
